Breast Cancer Survivor, Sharon Colbert

Women with Wings

I first learned about Women with Wings two years ago when I got the devastating news that I had breast cancer. The West Clinic is where I met Sandy, one of the group's leaders. I was upset, crying, and very scared. She consoled me and helped me to see that breast cancer was not the end of the world. With all the advances in medicine today, it was certainly not a death sentence.I was encouraged to attend a group meeting of Women with Wings. I went to my first meeting before I had my first chemotherapy treatment. When I walked in, the ladies were all sitting in a circle talking and wearing name badges. I was introduced to the group; everyone was so nice and friendly. After listening to the stories of all these brave women whose lives have been touched by cancer, I felt I had to share my story.

As I attended more and more sessions I felt a real, true bond with these ladies. We would and could share our innermost feelings, thoughts and fears. And we knew no one would judge us there. We're like sisters, best friends, mothers, and daughters to one another. We would cry, laugh, sing and pray together. The bonds among this group are so special. We feel each other's joy and happiness, pain and sorrows. Just a smile, a hug or a pat on the hand helps to lighten your troubles or worries. Being a part of Women with Wings helps you to appreciate the small things in life and to take nothing for granted. Each new day is truly a blessing and a gift from God.

I am a different person now, than I was two years ago, not only because I have endured breast cancer, but because of the new friendships I've made and old ones rekindled. Knowing others care means so much during your road to recovery, whether it's your spouse, children, family or friends; your co-workers, neighbors or someone brand new can make a world of difference. You somehow find the strength and courage to meet the challenges you face. Women with Wings has given me love, caring and compassion. They have given strength, support, faith and confidence, but most of all, they have helped me to find peace and contentment within myself. I am now trying to live my life to the fullest without many worries and with no regrets. This group has truly been an inspiration to me. I am so blessed that they have come into my life.

If your life is ever touched by cancer and you need to talk with someone, I recommend that you seek out Women with Wings. Your life will truly be enriched.
