The Therapy of Journal Writing
By Laurel Young
One effective form of therapy, often overlooked, is journal writing.
Journal writing can take many forms and cover any topic--from the feelings you had on the day you or a loved one found out you had cancer to a description of the most special gift you have ever received. It can be an unpolished five-minute entry written in words, phrases or short sentences that are written just for your benefit. However, if you want your journal to help others know, understand and remember you better, you may wish to write formal paragraphs, essays or stories or all of the above. These entries may describe a moment when you were especially proud of your child or narrate an act of kindness someone performed for you during your day. The possibilities are endless.
People who have kept journals describe many benefits. A journal is a friend you can confide in without fear of criticism. A journal can be a way of validating your fears, frustrations, hopes, joys, sorrows, disappointments, etc. It can even be a means of both personal and professional problem solving. Many journal writers claim that journal writing provides an opportunity to observe personal growth and development.
Getting Started
- Choose a comfortable, quiet place
- Set aside a certain time each day to write in your journal.
- Try to get yourself in a relaxed mood by closing your eyes, listening to some soothing music or reading something inspirational.
- Focus on the topic and try to relive the moment by remembering sights, sounds, etc. Write about what you know and remember best. Be sure to date each entry.
Journaling is a process for you. No right or wrong way exists. It's simply about capturing your own thoughts and emotions.
