Past Artist - Joy Tremewan

I created the Healing Heart series specifically for the Wings Gallery. Illness and disability are such transformative experiences, even when we recover from them, we are never quite the same. I have learned that keeping my heart and mind open are the only ways I can make it through this transformation, wherever it may lead. I am always amazed and humbled by the strength, humor, and insight of people who have faced their mortality and I try to reflect that in my work.

My artwork is a direct result of dealing with long term disability. I started about 10 years ago when multiple sclerosis forced me to spend more time sitting down and resting. I found working with fabric, thread and yarn very comforting. If you look close at these pieces, you'll see some of the stitches are rough, some of the fabric frayed -- my works are pieced together like our lives -- sometimes smooth, sometimes not, always colorful and mysterious.
