Is there an Anti-Cancer Diet?
Yes! The anti-cancer diet is one that helps your body fight
cancer.
It provides nutrients that reduce the risk of first and
recurring cancers and strengthens the immune system. It also limits foods that are not
health-enhancing or that may be cancer promoting. It is plant-based which means most of your
food – 2/3 of what you eat – comes from a plant, including:
- All
Vegetables and Beans and peas
- All
Fruits
- Whole
Grains (think bread, pasta, rice, cereal)
- Plant
oils (olive, canola)
- Nuts and seeds
You don’t have to be vegetarian but animal foods are limited
to no more than 1/3 of the food that you eat. This includes poultry, fish, lean
beef, pork and lamb (limit red meat to 18 oz. or less per week), low fat and
fat free dairy and eggs.
The focus is on real food, in appropriate portions. This also helps you achieve and maintain a
healthy weight – an important part of reducing your cancer risk. Healthy preparation techniques and healthy
fats are recommended.
While you try to
eat as healthful as possible most of the time, occasional treats are okay.
Food is the best way to physically feed our bodies. It is also woven into the fabric of our
social and emotional lives.
And good food should taste good.
My hope is that you find a way to eat that nourishes your
body without depriving your senses.
